The CISPAP (Complete Illustrated Standard for the Papillon and Phalene) was published in November 2005, in a limited edition of 1500 copies. Six years on, less than 200 copies remain. Almost 100 CISPAPs have been despatched by Deirdre, to over 10 countries, during the past 6 months alone. At some point, probably not too far ahead, they will all be gone.

So we have been thinking...very cautiously at this stage...about the possibility of producing a Revised CISPAP for the end of 2012. This would reflect all changes and developments in the breed pertaining to the Breed Standard, over the past six years.

A Revised CISPAP would be produced, again, in a limited edition of 1500 but the book would be longer - 200 pages instead of 176. There would be an entirely new section on Balance in the Papillon and Phalene, and an extended section on Age and Development, examining more closely (with photos and art work) the various stages of growth and development, in accordance with the requirements of the Breed Standards, from newborn puppies to veteran dogs.

One important change since 2005 is that the UK version of the Breed Std is now predicated on health, and "fit for purpose". For most Toy Breeds, the latter really means good health and construction, temperament and fitness as a companion. Therefore a Revised CISPAP would need to pay close attention to that, with new sections on health and genetics and more attention paid to Papillons and Phalenes in active or companionable pursuits such as agility, obedience and pet therapy. Any other revisions in Breed Std texts that have occurred, or which do occur, up until point of going to press will also be addressed in a Revised CISPAP of course.

Another is that the Phalene has now achieved separate status in Eire (Southern Ireland) and a Revised CISPAP could give space to evaluating how the Phalene has developed as a separate breed there, and to what extent discrete classification has benefited the Phalene both in Ireland in other countries. There is now a Phalene Club of Ireland, of course, which successfully held its first Championship Show in September - unimagined when we produced the CISPAP, and quite unthinkable when we produced our very first book, the Millennium Book of the Papillon, in the year 2000.

Related to the separate status achieved by the Phalene in Ireland is that fact that, in general, the Phalene has gone from strength to strength since 2005. Who would have thought, 20 years ago, that we would have not one but two Phalene BOB winners at Cruft's within a space of 10 years, competing against the finest show Papillons in the world? A Revised CISPAP would aim to reflect the increasingly important role of the Phalene as a show dog.

Should we be able to produce a Revised CISPAP, ALL the photographs would be completely new. So we would need much help, in due course - which we know from experience will be generous - from Papillon and Phalene breeders, exhibitors and fanciers all over the world, in providing us with photographs demonstrating both good and bad breed points. Some of Deirdre's art work would remain from the original CISPAP ad some would be adapted, but much of the art work would be completely new. All Mike's text would be revised and extended as appropriate.

As before, the 200 page Revised CISPAP would be A4, printed to the highest standards with our "trademark" onion skin separators, and contained within its own slipcase, with two printed bookmarks. 50 of the edition of 1500 would form the special Collectors' Edition.

We are also determined that the price of a Revised CISPAP should remain at £25.00, (as the CISPAP did until a few months ago; the last copies have only just been increased to £35.00). The CISPAP should remain an affordable book, despite its size, length and production costs - and it should be a working book that people feel able to thumb through and use, not just place on a bookshelf.

We know already from feedback that many people would love to have the opportunity of acquiring a Revised CISPAP 2012. This is extremely encouraging What is more daunting is the fact that, 6 years on - 7 really, as Deirdre's printer has to project for printing costs in more or less 12 months' time - printing costs have soared. A Revised CISPAP would cost almost twice what it cost to produce the original CISPAP.

This is mainly due to the rising cost in paper, which goes up almost monthly, although it also incorporates an increase of 30 pages for the book. Half the cost of any print job is always in the paper, and our paper is relatively expensive - people comment on it and its beautiful quality, but the truth is you cannot afford to economise too much on paper if you are to produce a book that will last, and if you want high quality reproductions of art work and photographs.

If we are to go ahead with the work on a Revised CISPAP, we need 50 Sponsors at £650.00 per Sponsorship. Last time it was £500. We have kept Sponsorship as low as we can, and although we realise it is a large sum of money it does compare favourably with the cost of full colour advertising in dog magazines and glossy annuals, which are not intended to have the permanence of a book. Nor do they reach out specifically to Papillon/Phalene breeders, exhibitors and Judges.

As before, Sponsorship is a package, not just an advertisement. Sponsors receive: -

One full page of colour advertising, - and we spend a great deal of time getting pages right for Sponsors. Ads can be amended right up to date of going to press.

Two copies of the Revised CISPAP (excluding postage, which we can never absorb - the book will weigh about 1.8 kilos)

Inclusion in the "Sponsors' Choice" section, which will also be extended to give Sponsors ore room for their text and a selected photograph of best/favourite dog.

Inclusion in "Roll of Honour"

Free set of original art work from the book, signed by Deirdre.

Sponsorship can also be shared with one other - useful if you have a joint breeding programme. Several people did that last time. This would mean £325 instead of £650. You have to share the page of ad, and the whole Sponsorship package of course.

We also invite breed Clubs to take Sponsorship, then share the cost of it between individual ads from Club members. We did not do this last time, but only because we did not think of it. We can accommodate 4 - 6 individual small ads on one page.

We know that many people would really like to acquire a Revised CISPAP, they have told us so: but only the financial commitment from 50 Sponsorships, world wide, will enable it to be produced.

Please contact Mike or Deirdre for more details if you are interested in becoming a Sponsor. The CISPAP has a dedicated group on Facebook so why not join us.
